Godzilla: King of the Monsters had its grand screening earlier last week and the first reactions are out. To a certain extent, they’re largely what we all expected. The movie delivers on the Kaiju mayhem, giving us epic monster-vs-monster battles featuring visuals that look grandiose and wallpaper material. Most importantly, it has plenty of Godzilla himself, a complaint that critics emerging from early screenings of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla had with that movie.
While the monsters, effects and the movie’s scale are receiving unanimous appreciation, they will also be saddled with carrying the movie forward. The human story and characters aren’t mentioned in any of the reviews, implying their lack of a major role in the movie. That said, fans have always wanted a Godzilla movie that’s more about Godzilla and the monsters than anything else so as long as the movie delivers on that front, it should get a seal of approval from the Kaiju fan-community.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters releases in theaters on May 31, 2019.
