Godzilla vs. Kong didn’t really have much time to market itself compared to its predecessor Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Announced almost hastily for a May 2021 release, it was pulled up another two months and is now set to bow out across the US next week, with its international release set for March 26. In India, it releases even sooner, on March 24. As such, the movie has had to make do with an aggressive marketing campaign that saw posters released in quick succession and left room open for only one major trailer.
Which is why this minute-long spot acts as a mini-trailer of sorts in itself. It is comprised of almost entirely new footage and at least some of it carries spoilers. The biggest spoiler of course is the reveal of Mechagodzilla who is seen rising and reflected in Godzilla’s eyes. That reveal had leaked much earlier a few weeks back until Warner Bros. took it down, presumably because it wasn’t ready to show it off yet.
As spoilery as things seem, Godzilla vs. Kong has long been rumored to go down the Batman v Superman route. The two titans will fight each other before being left with no option than to join forces to defeat a much stronger foe. Mechagodzilla has leaked plentiful among the movie’s toy and merchandize lineup and frankly it should come as no surprise to the die-hard fan that this is even a spoiler at this stage. The story details are being kept tightly under wraps but expect Mechagodzilla to be created as a way to bring Godzilla down by some fanatic science freak who believes Godzilla is a threat to humanity’s existence.
Godzilla vs. Kong releases in theaters and on HBO Max in the US next week, on March 31, 2021. It arrives internationally a week earlier on March 26, with its India release set for March 24, 2021.
