In 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar released to huge success, earning $2.78 billion to become the highest grossing movie of all time. It held the record for nearly a decade.

Inspired by the success of the film, Cameron started work on four sequels that would forge into a saga of films. Cameron spent the better part of a decade updating the technology to film these movies. Combined, the sequels will cost $1 billion to produce.

Avatar 5 is the fourth of these sequels and the final Avatar movie. It may end up being titled Avatar: The Quest For Eywa and is currently set for a Dec 2027 release.
