A Black Widow standalone movie is in the works at Marvel

A standalone Black Widow film is a topic that has cropped up multiple times ever since Scarlett Johannson appeared as the character first in Iron Man 2 and then in The Avengers. The banter shared between Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton hinting at their days together on a mission in Budapest teased enough plot for a spin-off. Now Marvel is apparently strongly considering such a movie, to the extent that it has attached a writer to the project.

Variety reports that Marvel has tapped in writer Jac Schaeffer to pen a first draft of a standalone Black Widow movie. Marvel President Kevin Feige has himself met the writer and finalized her after having gone through several candidates. The two have since, in collaboration with Scarlet Johannson, talked about what they want from a Black Widow movie. There’s no timeline, title or even an official confirmation from Marvel about this yet and the project is not officially green-lit but this is the closest we’ve heard of Marvel considering a Black Widow movie with all prior scoops being largely speculation and fan wishing.

With Marvel having mapped out its Phase 3 slate of movies until 2019, it’s highly unlikely we’ll get such a movie before 2020. It took Marvel around half a decade’s worth of discussions and talks to get Doctor Strange out and slightly more than that to get to Ant-Man. Seeing the roster of characters at their disposal, Feige would be in no hurry rush the Black Widow movie until it meets his standards. As to what the movie will be about, it could be a sequel-cum-prequel going back and forth beyond the events of Avengers 4 and before the events of Iron Man 2 a.l.a. The Godfather: Part II or it could be a full-fledged prequel movie showing Black Widow’s origins and early missions along with Hawkeye and other fresh characters. Perhaps Captain Marvel could make an appearance as well if it ends up being set in the 90s. It’s too early to gauge anything at this point now but it’s never too early to guess.
