Avengers: Infinity War breaks opening day record in India

While we await the Box-Office figures for North America to arrive, we now know that Avengers: Infinity War is breaking records in at least one country. According to multiple sources, the third Avengers movie has raked in anywhere between ₹30 to ₹40 crores on its first day in the country, which is a record for a Hollywood movie in India. For 2018, that also puts Infinity War at the top spot in the country, beating all previous Bollywood releases for the year.

Avengers: Infinity War has opened to a 90 percent occupancy in theaters, despite limited in only 2,000 screens, a small number by international standards. Movie ticketing platform BookMyShow reports that the movie has sold over 1 million tickets in the country, an astounding feat that comes only second to the highest grossing Indian movie Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Previously, the top opening day grosses for Hollywood movies in India stretched as much as ₹15 crore, which makes this an impressive feat by any accounts. At this rate, Infinity War could be looking at toppling records set by some big local films, given that the next 2 weeks present no imminent threat to challenge its box-office status.

It’s important to note that there’s some fluctuation when reporting box-office numbers in India. Unlike Box Office Mojo, there’s no clear-cut source available to obtain Indian numbers from, which is why news outlets generally quote statistics that fall in a particular range instead of getting an actual figure. However, all reports are positive that Infinity War looks set to post a humongous opening weekend in the country that could very well exceed ₹100 crores looking at the ongoing situation.

In the US, the movie’s opening weekend projections have been constantly undergoing revision. While Disney projected a more conservative opening of $175 million – $200 million, that figure was revised by media outlets to exceed $225 million and more recently, even exceed $250 million. At this rate, Infinity War is being touted as a possible contender to Star Wars: The Force Awakens which currently holds the record for the highest opening weekend in the US ever. We should have an idea of how Infinity War did on its first day soon in the next few hours. Stay tuned.

Avengers: Infinity War is out in theaters today. If you’re in India, let us know if you’d be contributing to the movie’s gross by seeing in in theaters.
