Free Guy Is Ryan Reynolds’ Favorite Movie He Has Ever Made

At CCXP 2019, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy premiered the trailer for Disney’s new film Free Guy about a guy trapped in a video game as an NPC. The trailer got an enthusiastic response from audiences who were cheering so loudly that Levy had to ask if they could hear the audio. It concluded with the audience giving Reynolds a standing ovation.

Free Guy is about an ordinary guy who enjoys his routine life, oblivious to the chaos, violence and explosions around him. Much like NPC behavior in video games, he is nonchalant to the noise surrounding him which he’s come to accept as mundane, until he has a desire to break free from the “monotony”. Reynolds compared the movie to Back to the Future calling it a similar tale for present generation audiences.

Levy on his part, described the movie as the rise of the idealist in a cynical world, which is a fitting description if you look at the trailer again. Before airing the trailer, Levy remarked to an eager-audience:

If you like it, we’re going to go backstage and hit a button and make it live on the Internet. If you don’t, we’re going to have to reassess a lot of things.

Reynolds on his part, called the movie his favorite one yet, a bold statement given he’s made Deadpool and Deadpool 2.

Free Guy is my favorite movie I’ve ever made, and that means a lot to me because I made Deadpool.

Free Guy hits theaters next year, on July 3, 2020. It is directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn and stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi.
