John Wick 3 is outmatching its predecessors by a wide margin. The Keanu Reeves action movie delivered a studio-reported opening weekend of $57 million, surpassing the $14 million weekend of John Wick and the $30 million that its sequel John Wick: Chapter 2 scored, combined. After opening to a strong $5.9 million Thursday, John Wick 3 went on to earn $22 million on its opening day. Accounting for international totals, Parabellum has a worldwide opening of $92 million, crossing the entire lifetime run of John Wick.
This gives Lionsgate its best opening weekend ever since 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 earned $102.6 million. Naturally, the studio is ecstatic and chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Joe Drake issued a statement conveying the enthusiasm, while praising Keanu Reeves and director / stunt coordinator Chad Stahelski for their phenomenal work on the film. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has also become the first movie to dethrone Avengers: Endgame from the domestic box office, as was hoped would happen yesterday.
John Wick is a unique character and franchise that has grown in popularity from film-to-film and keeps getting better and better, thanks to the incredible talent of Keanu Reeves and because of the creativity and true artistry of the filmmaking team and our partners at Thunder Road, as well as director Chad Stahelski. This is the best-reviewed film of the series so far, and we believe word-of-mouth will continue to drive strong business for the film all over the world.
Joe Drake, Chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group on the success of John Wick
John Wick 3 is enjoying a favorable reception from critics and audiences alike. The movie has a Certified Fresh 89% Score on Rotten Tomatoes as well as an Audience Cinemascore of A-, the same as Chapter 2. At this rate, it has a great shot at sailing past the $300 million mark, which would be a huge win for the franchise in general. If anything, it should guarantee that the franchise moves ahead.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is running in theaters now.
