Sacred Games Season 2 Has Begun Filming In Kenya and Mumbai
Filming on Sacred Games Season 2 has finally begun. The Mid-Day reports that principal photography on the Netflix show which was renewed for a second season commenced a fortnight ago. Much like its debut season, Season 2 will continue the parallel story threads of gangster Ganesh Gaitonde in the past as Sartaj Singh continues his journey in Mumbai. Gaitonde’s escape from prison last season has lead him to seek refuge in Kenya which is where Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Anurag Kashyap have been shooting. Saif Ali Khan is expected to continue in Mumbai.
The shooting in Kenya is being pegged as an elaborate shoot with a planned schedule of 50 days. It’s being speculated that, aside from using Kenya’s locales for filming, some locations might be used to recreate parts of old Mumbai, although that’s merely conjecture at this point. The second season will be helmed by two directors, with Anurag Kashyap taking over Gaitonde’s storyline and Neeraj Ghaywan will continue Sartaj’s story, taking over from Vikramaditya Motwane who will serve as showrunner. The season will focus on Gaitonde’s rise in Kenya as a crime overlord while also exploring his connection with Zoya, the actress, which was briefly teased towards the end of Season 1, as Sartaj continues to get to the bottom of Gaitonde’s plan.
Sacred Games was widely considered to be Netflix’s first big-budget Indian TV Show. It was received quite well by critics and audiences alike and was considered a success in viewership numbers, with praise showered on its direction, storylines, performances and production values though criticism was directed at the show’s explicity and often gratuitous use of violence, abusive language, sex and nudity. The showrunners defended their choices, wanting to adapt a story without any restrictions, something which a streaming platform like Netflix allowed them to. It unfortunately sparked a controversy triggering calls for censorship on streaming platforms, but to no avail so far.
Sacred Games stars Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Kubra Sait, Pankaj Tripathi, Surveen Chawla and Jitendra Joshi among others. There is currently no set air date for Sacred Games Season 2 although given the filming schedule, it could air in 2019 around the same time as Season 1 premiered in 2018.
