True to their word, Marvel Studios dropped a Black Widow special look trailer that showers us with plenty of new footage while showcasing some pretty intense action sequences between Widow and Taskmaster. The 1 minute 30 second long trailer also contains enough reused footage from Trailer 1 to be considered entirely fresh, but still has quite a lot of new sequences to be a mini-trailer in its own right. The trailer continues projecting Black Widow as having Captain America: Winter Soldier vibes with a dash of David Harbour’s Red Guardian thrown into the mix:
Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johansson display great chemistry in the little scenes they get to share together. The Red Guardian also makes a stronger impression as we get to see his super-strength in action while he tosses away guards with ease. But perhaps the biggest new reveals are reserved for the Taskmaster as we see him up close in combat with a slick outfit and shield. Together, the duo finish off the trailer in a stare down from a sequence that is poised to go down as one thrilling, intense fight with some terrific choreography.
There’s plenty to like in this trailer although there may not be much to dissect, given that part of it is essentially a rehash of the first trailer. The presence of SWAT teams looking for either Romanoff or Belova does raise the question of whether this is set from the MCU prequel era where both Widows were still associated with the KGB. The tone and genre contain serious espionage / political thriller vibes and much like Winter Soldier, this could turn out to be for the MCU’s better.
Black Widow will release in theaters on May 1, 2020 (or Apr 30, 2020). It stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbor, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz and is directed by Cate Shortland from a script by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson.
