Hugh Jackman shared a video on his official Instagram last week gymming up to get in shape. Among the hashtags in the post was #cameo, something which sent fans in a frenzy as to which movie could he be planning to make a guest appearance in. Before we deep-dive into details, here’s the post in question:
So why is this significant? Well, a few days back, an eagle-eyed fan spotted a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie show up among the list of upcoming Hugh Jackman movies when searched over Google. That movie unsurprisingly, was Avengers: Endgame, fueling rumors and speculations of Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine from X-Men to be a part of whatever multiverse MCU could be setting up. That theory was silenced quickly as the search results were updated but this post has sent the debates soaring again.
Does this mean that Jackman is preparing for a cameo in the next Avengers movie? Hugely unliely. The Disney-Fox deal is not finalized yet, and won’t be until March. And it’s only after the formalities are done will Marvel even begin to think about using those characters. That doesn’t mean Marvel President Kevin Feige hasn’t thought about it already; he generally plans way ahead into the future, but it’s still a gamble that Marvel won’t risk. Besides, integrating the X-Men into their universe this way could be a very cheap tactic to simply cash-in on Jackman’s current popularity as the character and Marvel will most probably want to go with a new cast when they launch their slate of X-Men characters.
That said, fans can’t rule this out entirely. There may be slim chance of this actually happening, perhaps even 1%. And for those who think it’s far too late to incorporate Jackman into any scenes now, remember Avengers: Infinity War shot its post-credits scene with Nick Fury and Maria Hill exactly around this month (end of the month to be precise). So filming-wise, it’s certainly not too late to shoot a small sequence hinting at Jackman’s presence in the MCU. Whether Marvel Studios will actually go that route is certainly under doubt. It’s possible Jackman is simply shooting some sequences for Dark Phoenix to jack up that franchise’ appeal.
What do you think Jackman’s cameo is for? Avengers: Endgame? X-Men: Dark Phoenix? Something entirely unrelated to superheroes (less likely, else Jackman wouldn’t need that physique)? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Avengers: Endgame releases in theaters on April 26, 2019.
