Created by the Wachowski Brothers, The Matrix released in theaters in 1999 and quickly went on to become one of the year’s sleeper hits. Starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus and Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity, The Matrix sees the world taken over by machines who have imprisoned humanity into a virtual simulation of the real world.
The movie’s success spawned a franchise that included two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, a spin-off The Animatrix and some tie-in video games. It is regarded as one of the more brainy science fiction franchises of all time, with the movies having grossed a net total of $1.5 billion.
The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth movie in the franchise and continues the story that culminated in Revolutions 18 years ago. Neo is “resurrected” and inserted back into the Matrix as he continues living his life as Thomas Anderson, oblivious to his past. But as events play out that mirror those from the previous films, Neo recognizes the deja vu that signifies a major glitch in the Matrix, begins remembering his past and sets out to understand what’s happening. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett-Smith reprise their roles as Neo, Trinity and Morpheus from the previous films respectively. They’re joined by Yahya-Abdul Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Christina Ricci and Priyanka Chopra
