Avatar Beats Avengers: Endgame, Reclaims Highest Grossing Movie Worldwide Title
A paraplegic ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) journeys to the alien world of Pandora with a team of scientists and researchers. Pandora is home to the alien Na’vi and its toxic environment requires the humans to link their minds to human / Na’vi hybrids to navigate it. Sully, gaining mobility using this ability, falls in love with a Na’vi woman and decides to rebel against the humans, whose goal is to mine the planet for the rare mineral unobtanium.
Directed by James Cameron, Avatar was made on a production budget of $237 million. It was written by Cameron as a treatment in 1994 was shot fully in 3D when the technology caught up to Cameron’s vision. It went on to become the highest grossing movie of all time, earning $2.78 billion worldwide.
Avatar was also launched as a Disney theme park, who now owns the franchise following their Fox acquisition. Four sequels are in development and are currently set to release 2 years apart beginning 2021.
